Finding True Friends

~James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded.

Before you can be a true friend to someone or have a true friend, you must first have God as your friend. To the born again teen girl, this means that God should be at the center of your life. If He is, He will guide you in choosing friends who will be good for you.

So what does the Bible have to say about picking the right kind of friends?

~Proverbs 12:26 The righteous [is] more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.

~Proverbs 13:20 He that walketh with wise [men] shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

~Proverbs 22:24-25 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: 25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

According to the Bible, making friends with an unsaved girl will only tempt you to sin. It is so hard to walk with God and be surrounded by friends who don’t love Him the way you do. They don’t care if they use His name in vain; they don’t care if they tell dirty jokes. They aren’t saved so these things don’t bother them the way they bother you. In fact, they will act totally the opposite of what the Bible teaches. You may think that you can lead them to Christ by being friends with them but the fact is that the total opposite will happen. They will lead you to sin. Why? Because the Bible teaches us not to have close relationships with the unsaved. So if we do, we are disobeying the Word and, therefore, that friendship will bring troubles. In other words, you reap what you sow.

~2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

God’s Word tells us not to be yoked with unbelievers. In the old days, a yoke was a wooden apparatus that was placed over two cows’ heads so they could be kept together as the farmer plowed a field. The cows couldn’t go in separate directions – if they did, the yoke would cause pain – a literal “pain in the neck”! 🙂

You’ll also find yourself picking up some of their bad habits. So you’re just making your life harder – make it easier for yourself and stick to other girls who are saved and love the Lord.

Another good reason to stay away from unsaved friends is:

~1 Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

The longer you hang around unsaved friends, your attitude is going to change. You will begin to sound like them and act like them. You’ll be using their language (cursing and crude slang) and you will become like them. If you hang around a skunk long enough, you’ll begin to smell like the skunk. It’s my understanding that once you get skunk smell on you, it’s so hard to wash it off – it takes days! It’s kind of a good example, don’t you think? If you hang around the unsaved, it’ll take you a long time to get rid of the bad habits that are formed in those relationships. It’s inevitable!

But when you hang around Godly girls it’s like hanging around roses – hang around them long enough you’ll come out smelling like a beautiful rose 🙂
