Abandoning “Friends”

GiftofFriendship

Friendship is a wonderful gift when it is experienced in a biblical way. I think of the friendship of Jonathan and David – what a beautiful picture! I also think of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who went through the fiery furnace together. Their faith and love were rewarded with the Lord Jesus Christ making an appearance and protecting them! 🙂

I’ve heard from teens who struggle in their walk with the Lord because their unsaved friends (or Christian friends who are not well grounded in God’s Word) lead them astray. So what does the Bible have to say about these types of friends?

1 Corinthians 5:11 – But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

Proverbs 27:10 – Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: [for] better [is] a neighbour [that is] near than a brother far off.

2 John 1:10-11 – If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into [your] house, neither bid him God speed:

Jesus Christ is the best example of a friend. He lead His disciples to salvation – He taught them – He cared for them – He wept with them. He showed His love for them by feeding them and caring for them. In fact, in the account of His friend Lazarus, He even raised him from the dead! Jesus is the best friend you will ever have!

Proverbs 18:24 – A man [that hath] friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend [that] sticketh closer than a brother.

There will be times when your friends, even your own parents, will abandon you. But not the Lord Jesus! David knew this and wrote about this very thing:

Psalms 27:10 – When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.

Don’t be deceived, teen girl. Your unsaved friends will lead you down a sinful path full of troubles. It is best to avoid these troubles by not getting too close to these types of friends. A rotten apple ALWAYS rots other apples.
